The Chilean Miners
Heroic Survivors

The rescue of 33 miners from a collapsed mine in Chile has been compared to the moon landing for the way in which it captured the world's attention.

Over a billion people watched on television, and millions more viewed live video streams on the internet. With unprecedented media access, viewers became part of every stage of the rescue, which was in and of itself a triumph of engineering and collaboration.

The fact that all the miners survived for 69 days 700 meters deep--the length of 7 football fields-- below the earth's surface has been called a miracle. In addition to the faith and hope of the miners and the countless others engaged in their story, their survival is a testament to their own teamwork, organization and discipline.

The Chilean Miners: "Mission Accomplished"

When a mine collapsed in Chile on August 5, 2010, no one knew the fate of the 33 miners trapped inside, but their families, buoyed by their strong faith, never gave up hope.

Seventeen days later, when they got word that "Estamos bien en el refugio los 33" -all 33 miners were still alive-- there was jubilation all over the world.

It also kicked into high gear the tremendous rescue effort that was to last an additional 13 weeks and become one of the most viewed events in history.

Now, the miners bring their story to you: Luis Urzua, the shift supervisor at the time of the collapse, he was elected foreman and was also the last man out of the mine, Juan Carlos Aguilar, a journeyman miner with 30 years' experience and Samuel Avalos, a miner for only 5 months at the time of the collapse.
