The Chilean Miners
Heroic Survivors
The rescue of 33 miners from a collapsed mine in Chile has been compared to the moon landing for the way in which it captured the world's attention.
Over a billion people watched on television, and millions more viewed live video streams on the internet. With unprecedented media access, viewers became part of every stage of the rescue, which was in and of itself a triumph of engineering and collaboration.
The fact that all the miners survived for 69 days 700 meters deep--the length of 7 football fields-- below the earth's surface has been called a miracle. In addition to the faith and hope of the miners and the countless others engaged in their story, their survival is a testament to their own teamwork, organization and discipline. Read More
When the mine collapsed, the men had only rations enough for two days. For over two weeks, they didn't know if they would live or die or if anyone even knew where they were. Due to their impressive control, when the first borehole reached them 17 days later, they still had rations remaining.
Down below, decisions were made as a group, with each man having a vote. According to shift leader Luis Urzua, this contributed to the trapped men's sense of teamwork and their dedication to a common goal. "You just have to speak the truth and believe in democracy," said Urzua.
Everyone was given a job to do, and they worked as a team to keep up morale. Their decision to implement structure and calm in the face of such dire circumstances brought out the best in them and allowed them to be true partners with the rescue teams above ground.
Now, the miners telling the official story of the experience are available to come to your event. They represent the best of what this amazing drama has to offer: the successful payoff of hundreds of people working together in a life-or-death situation coupled with the triumph of the human spirit.

The Chilean Miners: "Mission Accomplished"
When a mine collapsed in Chile on August 5, 2010, no one knew the fate of the 33 miners trapped inside, but their families, buoyed by their strong faith, never gave up hope.
Seventeen days later, when they got word that "Estamos bien en el refugio los 33" -all 33 miners were still alive-- there was jubilation all over the world.
It also kicked into high gear the tremendous rescue effort that was to last an additional 13 weeks and become one of the most viewed events in history.
Now, the miners bring their story to you: Luis Urzua, the shift supervisor at the time of the collapse, he was elected foreman and was also the last man out of the mine, Juan Carlos Aguilar, a journeyman miner with 30 years' experience and Samuel Avalos, a miner for only 5 months at the time of the collapse.
In an interactive and fascinating interview format, they tell of what they have learned from their incredible ordeal, inspiring audiences worldwide.
